Obituary for Sara Garel

Sara Garel, 90; mother of Beverly Tatum (Floyd), Jayne Sims (Bashiell), Janet Bowman (Philip), passed away Tue. March 27th; FUNERAL begins 10:30 AM Tue. April 3rd at St. Andrews Episcopal Church 2171 E. 49th Street Cle. 44103

Sara Parker Riley Garel was born the second of two children to the late Edgar Parker and Beula E. Taylor Parker. Her brother Lawrence predeceased her. She spent her early years in West Virginia. At the urging of relatives, her mother moved her two children to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

She graduated from Arsenal High School. Following high school, she met and married Harold Riley. To that union one daughter, Beverly was born. Following her divorce, she chose secretarial work. She was detailed, efficient and articulate and because of this, she was encouraged by relatives and friends to move to Cleveland where better opportunities awaited her. She worked for the Federal Government which offered opportunities to travel and to give presentations on government policies and procedures.

In the 1970’s, she met and married the late Joseph Donald Garel. This union brought three adult children to nurture, Joseph, Jr. (deceased), Jayne Sims (Dashiell), and Janet Bowman (Philip). After her marriage, she joined her husband as a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. For several years she served as the church secretary and the Chalice Ministry.

She also spent several years working at Cuyahoga Community College. She ended her secretarial career in the County. She was involved in her community and was very active with the Lee-Harvard Democratic Ward Committee.

She and her late husband enjoyed traveling and during her retirement years, she enjoyed reading, knitting, and sewing. Her last three years were spent at Eliza Bryant Village where she was known for her quick wit.

She leaves to cherish her memory, Beverly and Floyd Tatum, Arlinda Tatum Halsell, the Bowman Family, the Sims Family, and her Godchildren, Arthur Fuller, Patricia F. Thornton and Lisa Lindsay, and other friends and relatives.
