McKinley Capers, a loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2026, following a long illness. He was 89 years old. McKinley was born on February 21, 1937, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Herman and Anna Mae Capers. As a young boy, he and his family moved to Northeast Ohio, where he would make his home and build a life centered around family, friendship, hard work, and his love of sports.
McKinley attended Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from Thomas Edison High School in 1955. A talented student-athlete, he lettered in both football and basketball. It was during his high school years that he met Ethel Johnson. The two married soon after graduation and began a life together that was blessed with three sons, Michael, Mark, and Marty. McKinley was also a proud father to son Ervin and daughter Yolanda. He was a dedicated and hardworking man who began his career with Sears and Roebuck before joining Roadway Express, where he devoted more than 30 years of service before he retired in 2000.
Outside of work, sports remained a lifelong passion. As an adult, McKinley was an avid softball player who participated in numerous local leagues. Over the years, he transitioned from player to manager, continuing to share his love of the game with others. His enthusiasm for sports extended far beyond the softball field. He was a devoted Cleveland sports fan and could often be found enthusiastically watching games on television and cheering on Cleveland's teams. Sports brought him great joy, but it was the people in his life who brought him the greatest fulfillment.
Family and friendship were at the heart of McKinley's life. He was a loving father and grandfather, a devoted uncle who treasured his nieces and nephews, and a loyal friend to many. He will be remembered for the relationships he built, the joy he shared, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. McKinley was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Anna Mae Capers; his beloved wife, Ethel Capers; and his son, Ervin Wilson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Michael Capers, Mark Capers (Vanessa), and Marty Capers (Dana); daughter, Yolanda Warren (Eric); nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Peggy Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
