Listen to Obituary

Brenda Olivia Denise Smiley was born to loving parents, VaShawn Smiley and Jessica Hurst. From an early age, Brenda accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior, establishing a foundation of faith that would become a defining part of her life and the legacy she leaves behind.

Brenda was a bright, beautiful, and remarkable young lady who embraced life and lived it to the fullest. She was a student at John Adams College and Career Academy, where she consistently demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to her education. A proud member of the National Honor Society, Brenda achieved impressive scores on both the ACT and SAT. She was on track to graduate in 2027, a goal she was pursuing with determination and purpose. Her dream was to become a pediatrician, dedicating her future to caring for children and making a difference in their lives.

Beyond her academic accomplishments, Brenda had a personality and spirit all her own. She loved reading and could often be found enjoying a good book or browsing the aisles of Barnes & Noble. She also enjoyed coloring, makeup, fashion, hairstyles, and getting her nails done. She appreciated all things beautiful and loved expressing herself through her own unique style.

Brenda was lively, charismatic, spunky, and full of life. She was never afraid to speak her mind or let her personality shine. Her beautiful smile could light up any room, and her presence brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories. She was deeply loved by so many, and her circle of friends was truly unmatched. One of her most treasured relationships was the special, unbreakable bond she shared with her brother, a connection that will forever hold a special place in her family's heart.

Brenda faced a rare and challenging cancer known as osteosarcoma. Yet, even in the midst of her journey, her faith remained a source of strength. Rooted in the foundation of Christ that had been instilled in her from a young age, Brenda learned to trust God, lean on His promises, and stand firm in her faith. Her circumstances did not define her; her courage, worship, and unwavering belief in God spoke volumes about the strength of her spirit.

Her love for God was evident in the way she worshiped and served. At a young age, Brenda demonstrated a heart of intercession, faithfully praying for her Uncle Tom. She also shared her beautiful voice as a member of the Harvest Time Evangelist Children's Choir. One of her favorite gospel artists was Tasha Cobbs, and her favorite song, Break Every Chain, reflected the power of the faith she carried within her. Brenda exemplified the love of Christ, unity, and faith. When it came time to worship, she stood ten toes down and gave God everything she had. Her praise was genuine, her faith was personal, and her love for God was undeniable.

And because Brenda was wonderfully and unapologetically Brenda, we must also mention her love for a good seafood boil! It was one of the many things that brought her happiness and made her smile.

Brenda's life was a beautiful reminder that greatness is not measured by the number of years one lives, but by the love shared, the lives touched, and the memories left behind. Though her time here was far too short, the impact of her life will remain forever in the hearts of those blessed to know and love her.

On November 1, Brenda departed this earthly life and entered into her eternal rest. Though our hearts are broken by her absence, we find comfort in knowing that her life was rooted in Christ and that her faith now carries her into eternity.
