Oliver was born February 14, 1924, in Bessemer Alabama to Dewitt and Emma Blocker. Oliver was the youngest of 13 siblings. He accepted Christ at an early age at The Old Jonesboro Baptist Church. Oliver loved to worship the Lord teaching Sunday School at Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church. Oliver later joined Bethany Baptist Church where he attended until his death. He worked on the farm with his brothers and sisters. This is where he developed his relentless work efforts. He was taught to work from sunup to sundown, hence instilling the same ethics to his children.
Oliver enlisted in the Navy upon completion of high school on May 15, 1943. He served his country faithfully for two years and six months receiving an honorable discharge. Oliver attended Booker T Washington school of Business after leaving the Navy. Oliver married Ethel Posey on Oct 6, 1946 of which three children were born, Patrica Ann, Oliver Jr. and Alfred James. Oliver always had love for cooking which led him to venturing into the restaurant business. Oliver was always a go getter owning a Barbecue restaurant in Bessemer Ala. He also was an advocate photographer taking classes at Cuyahoga Community College. Oliver was a man who loved to plant his gardens every year.
Oliver also built his home with his brother and nephews in Alabama. Oliver didn't get an opportunity to live in his newly built home because he moved to Cleveland.
He brought his family to Cleveland, Ohio in 1952 after securing a job with The Navy Finance Center. He retired after 25 years of dedicated service. Oliver moved to 112th Street Superior in 1956 where he resided until his death. Oliver always strived to succeed in all of his ventures. He started investing in real estate property as well as getting his real estate license. Oliver worked on his properties late into his nineties making them affordable for his tenants. He was a jack of all trades. He was deeply involved in community activities within the community, Oliver served as the president of the 112th street club. He always stressed education to his children as well as relatives and friends especially the young children on 112th Street. He was generous with his time and constantly sharing lessons learned with all around him. He was known as " Daddy Blocker" to the people on 112th street.
Oliver loss his wife Ethel in 1990 and he was devastated,He found the new love of his life Rosalind Hampton in June of 1991. They remained together until he took his last earthly breath. It is not often one has the honor of having two true love. Oliver enjoyed taking his boat out spending the day fishing with his buddies. He also loved attending the Blocker Family Reunion every two years.
Oliver was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Blocker, his daughter Patricia Ann and all of his brothers and sisters.
Oliver is survived by his sons, Oliver Jr, Alfred James (Marilyn); Grandsons, Devin Riley, Rodney Lee (Samatha) Gavin Oliver (Carmen); Granddaughters, Leah (Hassan), Olivia Amy Brown, Charisse Evans; Great Grandchildren, Simone, Cameron and Jamal and many nieces and nephews.
Oliver also leaves behind Rosalind's Family, Jeanette Davis Art McGee, and Christopher Hampton and a host of grandkids . Oliver departed his earthly body on September 16, 2021 at 4:55 am with Rosalind at his side. May He Dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
