Gertrude Crenshaw was born January 5, 1930, in Maxeys, Georgia to the late William Sign and Clara Hurt. Gertrude was the second youngest of twelve children. In addition, she had another set of seven siblings. A total of fifteen siblings preceded her in death.

Approximately, 1946, Gertrude moved to Cleveland, Ohio. She was educated in Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from the "Old Central High School".

In 1966, she was united in marriage with the late Claude Crenshaw, Sr. whereas she gained three bonus children: Claude, Jr. (deceased), Barbara, and Karen.

As a long-standing member of Bethany Baptist Church, Gertrude faithfully attended Sunday services until her illness. Her love for God remained unwavering.

She was also a committed employee with the City of East Cleveland as a Deputy Registrar from 1975 until she retired in 2001.

Gertrude was highly respected, classy, and always well dressed, her hair flawless, and her rich colored lipstick topped off her look. Not only was her appearance impeccable, so was her cooking. She was an amazing cook and especially known for delighting appetites with her signature potato salad and squash. Through her passion for cooking, she kindly provided meals for those less fortunate.
