Tammie Lynette Mitchell was born on December 5, 1965, to Timothy and Sandra Holt, both of whom preceded her in death. Tammie was the third child of six and the youngest of the girls. She loved music and dancing and was a devoted fan of her longtime crush, Michael Jackson. Tammie graduated from East High School in Cleveland in 1982.
Tammie's smile was sunshine, and her laugh was unmistakable. Something many may not have known is that she lived with Bell's palsy, and in the 1980s, an incident involving a brick coming through a car window left her needing stitches. Tammie sometimes viewed her beauty as a challenge, and her grandfather affectionately called her his "grand-baby with a crooked smile." She courageously overcame her insecurities, though others saw only a unique beauty that complemented her spirit.
Tammie married the love of her life, Robert Carter, and together they had two sons, Robert Carter Jr. and Rhaseem "Roc" Carter (Leiloni). She also embraced Lorenzo Cole as her son.
Tammie loved many and disliked very few, but her kindness was never to be mistaken for weakness. She was fiercely protective, like a mother bear defending her cubs, when it came to those she considered family. Her faith in Jesus Christ was undeniable. She was baptized and stood firmly in her belief, even during her illness, often saying, "It's up to God," rather than accepting discouraging medical reports. She encouraged others not to be angry with or lose faith in God.
Tammie served faithfully, helping with church hunger programs and events. She loved Bingo, family gatherings, music, dancing, and enjoying life. Even in her final days, she comforted others while being comforted herself. She was granted grace and mercy through extended time, and even doctors were amazed by her strength as she continued to eat and drink. Her final Facebook post on February 26, 2026, read: "HEY FAMILY I MISS YOU 😘."
Wherever Tammie was, her best friend and sister Janice was never far behind. Though the youngest of the girls, she lovingly treated all her brothers as her "little brothers." Her home was a safe haven for many-those facing homelessness, relationship struggles, addiction, or hardship. Tammie was a counselor with a big heart: she would feed you, correct you, and take you in, even if you stumbled again. To capture all she did would fill a book. As the saying goes, the tombstone shows a birth date and a death date, but it is the dash in between that matters-Tammie made that dash count.
TAMMY-her name will always bring back memories of joy. She leaves her legacy of love to her husband, Robert Carter.
Children: Robert Carter Jr., Rhaseem "Roc" Carter (Leiloni), and Lorenzo Cole.
Grandchildren: Adam Whitby, Rhaseem Carter Jr., and Aleiya Carter.
Siblings: Terrie Jackson (Evandrew, deceased), Janice Ogletree (Raymont, deceased), Timson Mitchell, Otis Holt (Rhonda), and Tim "TC" Holt (Shavon).
The Crush Crew: Anjanece, Nafeeha, Teresa, Salayda, and Endia.
She also leaves a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and dear friends.
This is not a goodbye, but a "see you later"-for those who are right with the Most High God and believers in Jesus Christ. Our Father in Heaven has called Tammie Mitchell-Carter home and left us with the charge to live, love, laugh, and cherish every day we are given.
Let go of hate. Forgive one another. We all have a mandatory appointment with God, and how you stand before Him matters. Repent, forgive, and draw close to God-only then will you see Tammie and your loved ones again.
