Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Roger Scott Payne
October 28, 1950 - January 18th, 2026
A Life of Sound, Service, and Spirit
Roger Scott Payne, affectionately known by all as "Scotty," was a man of extraordinary talent, deep faith, and a relentless drive to serve others. Born on October 28, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Brady C. and Betty Elizabeth Payne, Scotty's journey was defined by his "God-given gifts" and his ability to master everything he touched.
The Voice of Glenville
A proud graduate of Glenville High School's Class of 1969, Scotty's brilliance was evident early on. As a standout member of the school's "Radio Club," he hosted his own successful radio show, broadcasting throughout his time as a student. His technical prowess as an audio engineer reached a historic peak in 1967 when he was called upon to record Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legendary speech during a visit to Glenville High School.
Scotty's curiosity knew no bounds. He spent time studying meteorology under the mentorship of the legendary Dick Goddard of Channel 8 News, blending his love for science with his natural gift for communication.
A Career of Dedication
Scotty was a cornerstone of the Case Western Reserve University community, where he served for over 35 years as a Moving Supervisor. Never one to slow down, he combined his professional expertise with his entrepreneurial spirit to create a successful surplus office furniture business, providing a valuable service to the Cleveland area.
His faith and his talents were perfectly intertwined at Morning Star Baptist Church. Serving under the late Dr. Earl Preston, Scotty was the sound engineer for the iconic weekly broadcast, "I'm So Happy," which aired on WKYC TV throughout the 1970s. His technical touch ensured the message of the gospel reached homes across the city.
The "Iron Chef" and Green Thumb
Beyond his professional accolades, Scotty was a man of many passions. He possessed a true gift for horticulture, tending to life with the same care he gave to his family. To those who knew him best, he was the ultimate "Iron Chef." Whether it was his famous tuna casserole, his legendary dressing, grilled ribs, or his secret-recipe homemade barbecue sauces, Scotty's kitchen was a place of love, laughter, and incredible flavor.
A Legacy of Love
Above all, Scotty was a "father figure" to many-a man whose guidance, wisdom, and kindness shaped the lives of those around him. He was a pillar of strength and a source of constant encouragement.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 47 years, Joanell Payne; his five children: Eric (Wife Krystal), Damon, Angela, Sharon, and Brady; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Joanne, Eddie (Wife Gail), and Richard. He joins in eternal rest with his parents and his sisters, Gayle and Kimberly. He will be deeply missed by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.
