A Life of Style and Substance: Remembering Mary Kay Vance 🕊️

Mary Kay Moore Vance lived boldly, guided by courage, conviction, and unmistakable style. Born in Milledgeville, Georgia and later making Cleveland, Ohio her home, she stood on the right side of history from an early age, never afraid to challenge injustice or expectations.

A true trendsetter, Mary Kay was known for her signature flair and fearless fashion sense-always making an entrance and leaving an impression. Her style was legendary, as was her pride in presenting herself and her family with elegance and intention.

On October 25, 1957, she married Wilburn C. Vance, and together they welcomed two children, Rodney and Cheryl. Mary Kay was a graduate of Dyke College, earning a certificate as an Executive Secretary, and went on to work as a secretary to the General Manager of Sears and Roebuck. She later retired from the Ohio Lottery Commission in 2000, where she was affectionately known as "Mother Teresa" for her kindness and service to others.

A faithful member of New Covenant Lutheran Church in East Cleveland for over 60 years, she was its oldest and longest-serving member. Serving for over 60 years. Her heart for service was evident through more than 30 years of dedication to the Hunger Network.

Mary Kay was an early advocate for equality, a proud Democrat, and an active supporter of civic life, including campaigning for Congressman Louis Stokes and attending the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.

She believed deeply in "giving flowers while she could smell them" and lived that truth daily. She leaves behind a legacy of fairness, fierce love for her family, and an unshakable spirit.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." ✨

Resting in Grace

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Freddie Moore and Annie Moore Miller; her beloved sister, Argeon L. Hall; and her "brother-in-love," John Hall.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving son, Rodney C. Vance (Phyllis); her devoted daughter, Cheryl Vance Thomas (Jim); her five wonderful grandchildren, Andre Atkinson, Ashley Rhodes (Randy), James B. Thomas IV, Jillian Kay Thomas, and Rodney C. Vance II; special niece, Kimberly Hale; dear great nephew Michael Russaw; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of treasured cousins and friends.

A bold trailblazer and a dedicated "straight shooter," Mary Kay championed the cause of equality and led with a firm, principled hand. She lived life at full speed, always standing on the right side of history and giving selflessly to all.
