It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Campbell-Lawson, who left us at the age of 98 on April 24, 2026. Mary was a woman whose life was defined by service, humility, and an unwavering devotion to her family and community.
Mary was born to Bartelia Gentry and Henry Thomas on July 1, 1927, in Humboldt, Tennessee. She later moved to Cleveland with her family, a city she loved and supported. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Geroy Thomas, and James Thomas. She is survived by her daughter, Mabel Evelyn Smith, who resides in Cleveland and shared a close, loving relationship with her mother. Her granddaughter, Leslie Smith, was ever-present in Mary's life, as was her grandson, Roosevelt Junior Smith (deceased). Mary is also survived by four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, as well as many cousins in Cleveland, Toledo, and Tennessee.
Mary was loved by many, as she lived a life filled with compassion, purpose, and a genuine love for family and those around her. In addition to raising a caring and beautiful daughter, Mary served for many years as the president of her community association. She often reminisced about her conversations with community leaders at City Hall, always seeking ways to uplift and strengthen the neighborhood she cherished.
Even as Mary's health declined, her concern for her family and community never faded. She frequently asked family, neighbors, and friends what she could do to help. She made it a personal practice to check on those around her, forming close bonds and friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Mary's favorite saying was, "I love the Lord." Her faith guided her daily life, and she spoke openly about God, her experiences, her love of family, the joy of gardening, and the history of Cleveland. She was humble, devoted, and always ready to serve. Mary loved her family, friends, and neighbors deeply. Her legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and a profound commitment to family and community.
From the Family:We are deeply grateful for your prayers, love, and support. God bless Leslie and Joanne for all their help and support, as well as the members of Neighbors on the Street. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Cadre Hospice Care for their devotion and excellent care of Mary Campbell-Lawson.
