Brother Marvin Hughes heard about Islam while serving in the United States Navy under the leadership of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad (RA). He served honorably from 1950 to 1954 and later embraced the leadership of Elijah Muhammad's son, Imam W. Deen Mohammed (RA).

Affectionately known as Amir Hamed by his brothers at Masjid Bilal, Brother Marvin was a devout Muslim and a steadfast member of the masjid from his youth until his final days. He served diligently as the Head of the Security Team.

Marvin was married to the love of his life, Sister Absilla (formerly Absilla X), who served as the school nurse at The Muhammad University of Islam for Temple 18, located on Holton Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. The Temple was under the leadership of Minister Theodore Hamza (RA) and Captain Alfonzo X Miller (RA). Allahu Akbar! Through this union, Marvin became a devoted stepfather to her son, Fredrick Turner, also known as Farid Hafiz.

Marvin was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion and proudly served in the United States Navy, receiving an honorable discharge. He was a graduate of the Cleveland Public School System and later worked as a Chef at Landerhaven Country Club in Pepper Pike, Ohio, where he eventually retired.

He was the only child born to Chester and Lillian Hughes (also known as Lillian Hameed), who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Absilla, and his stepson Fredrick Turner (Farid Hafiz).

Marvin leaves to cherish his memory his cousin and brother-in-law, Donald Hill (whose wife Shirley preceded him in death); four beloved nieces: Brenda Battle (whose husband Fred also preceded her in death), Lillian Hawkins (Robert), Karen Hill (Marvin), and Donna Stokes (Lonnie); as well as his step-grandchildren, Fredrick Turner Sr. (Farid Ibn Abdul Hafiy) and Elizabeth Turner. He is also remembered by numerous other step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and by a host of close friends who considered him more than just a friend.
