Lindsey Stewart was born on September 6, 1951, in Robinsonville, Mississippi, to the late Albert and Mary Lane. He was the youngest of eight children born to this union. Lindsey attended Delta High School in Walls, Mississippi. Later, the family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where Lindsey made his home.
