In Loving Memory of Jovan Maurice Varner March 8, 1985 - September 5, 2026
Jovan Maurice Varner, 41, passed away, Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. Born on March 8, 1985, Jovan brought immeasurable warmth, infectious humor, and boundless energy to everyone around him. He grew up in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood, near 117th Street and St Clair, surrounded by a devoted circle of friends and extended family.
Jovan attended Charles H. Lake Elementary School, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Glenville before earning his GED elsewhere. As a child, he was rambunctious, playful, and full of energy. He loved having fun, telling jokes, and making others laugh. His teasing came from a playful heart, never a desire to hurt anyone.
Jovan first met Dominique in third grade, never knowing that when their paths crossed again as young adults, she would become the love of his life. Together, they had a daughter, Dajianique Jovanna Varner, whom he loved dearly and affectionately called his “princess.” He eagerly looked forward to becoming a grandfather to baby Onyx Jovani. Although he did not get to meet his grandchild, his family holds dear the hope that they will meet in the new world to come.
Jovan had a creative spirit and enjoyed drawing, writing, and making things for his family whenever he found the time. He also loved playing chess, especially with his cousin Hashim. He enjoyed celebrating with family and friends, sharing food and drinks, and filling every gathering with laughter. Spending time outdoors with loved ones, especially his 117th Street family, brought him joy.
His bright smile, compassionate nature, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.Jovan leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents, Joella L. Varner and Roosevelt C. Payne; his beloved daughter, Dajianique Jovanna Varner, and her mother, Dominique; his eagerly awaited grandchild, Onyx Jovani; his sister, Rochelle Varner (Ronald); his brother, Noelle Nelson; and his special brothers, Fred, Keith, Reese, Mar-Mar, and L’A.
He is also lovingly remembered by Lashon L. (T'Andre), his very special cousin, sister, and friend; and his special cousins, Hashim, Tracey, Ken, Santana, and Lil Toni.
His memory lives on through his nephews, Ronald, Jaron, Jordan, Jaylin, Noelle Jr., Avontay, and Tatum; his very special niece, Jasmine, whom he affectionately called “Moo”; his great-nieces, Kimoni, Kamyah, Khloe, and Legacy; and his great-nephews, De’Andre, Kayden, Kyrie, and Legend.
He also leaves his aunts, Leslie A., Kaleema (Abdul), and Jeri L. (Wayne); his uncles, John E., Jason L. (Cheryl), and Ronald A.; and a host of cousins, relatives, and extended family and friends from 117th and Sellers, too numerous to name.
Jovan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Geraldine A. and William Lee Varner Sr., and Lurline Payne; his aunt, Toni Marie Scott; and his uncles, William Lee Varner Jr. and Javis Lamonte Varner.
Jovan, you were deeply loved, and you will be greatly missed. You will remain forever in our hearts as we look forward to seeing you again in the new world to come.
