Josephine Ward

October 16, 1933 — September 7, 2025

Josephine "Josie" Wright Ward was born in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Emily Hamm and Judge Wright. She was the eldest of five children, four of whom preceded her in death: John Wright, Henry Franklin, Mary Emily Wright-Cartman, and Freeman Wright.

Her education began at Alabama State Nursery Elementary School and Alabama State Laboratory High School. She later attended Alabama State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Dedicated to lifelong learning, Josie pursued additional certifications in physical education, Bible study, and Head Start education.

Josephine was united in holy matrimony to the late Reverend Eugene W. Ward Sr. Their union was a foundation of faith, service, and community commitment.

Josie devoted more than thirty years of her life to teaching at Miles Elementary School, where she inspired countless young students with her knowledge, patience, and compassion. Beyond her classroom work, she extended her talents to the Ministerial Daycare and Head Start Association for another thirty years, leaving a lasting impact on early childhood education.

Her dedication and leadership were recognized in numerous roles: she served as President of the National Council of Negro Women, Director of Operations for the Ministerial Day Care Association (MDCA), and was an active member of the Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association. She also served on multiple boards, tirelessly advocating for national Head Start education and its impact on children and families.

A committed civil rights advocate and community activist, Josie played an instrumental role in advancing educational policies and creating job opportunities for the urban community in the greater Cleveland area. Her influence and determination contributed to meaningful change, uplifting both her profession and her community.

Josie leaves to cherish her memory her beloved nephews, Tracy Wright and Terrell Wright; her nieces, Franisia Wright Spearman, Cynthia C. Fuentes, Princess James, and Linda Cartman; her great-nieces, Antoinette Cartman-Gay (Roy) and Jennifer Cartman; her great-nephew, David Cartman; and her great-great nieces and nephews, Sydney, Jayland, Dayson, Hailey Gay, Ryan, Cameron, Malik, and Brooklyn Cartman. She is also remembered with love by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, colleagues, associates, and close friends.

Her legacy of education, advocacy, and faith continues to live on through the lives she touched and the countless individuals she inspired.
