Obituary
Joe Louis Mitchell was born in West Palm Beach, FL to Charles and Maxine (née Mobley) Mitchell. He was the second eldest son of nine children. Joe and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in the 1940's.
Joe was raised in the "projects" off of 55th and Central Avenue. During his formative years, he became friends with a group of people down the way that called themselves "Brick City Kids" and he remained friends with many of them for decades.
Joe graduated from East Tech high school, then enlisted in the Army in 1961 where he was honorably discharged after two years of service. Joe later married Jeannette K. Mitchell and together they loved and reared their daughter Elisia (Lisa) Mitchell who proceeded them both in death.
Joe worked for LTV Steel and had a tremendous career which afforded him a comfortable lifestyle. Joe enjoyed going to Friendly Inn Settlement House where they gathered to dance and had a club vibe on Tuesday nights. He and his wife traveled extensively across the country and on cruises to various fun destinations. He was a master chess player and taught many of his nephews how to strategically play the game. He prided himself in being very healthy and credited his ability to remain active into his old age to Tai Chi, Capoeira, and Karate.
Family was at the center of Joe's world. As he and his siblings began having children, the family would gather at the Big House for fish fries, chicken dinners and card playing. No matter the occasion, if Joe's family was going to be there, he wanted to be there too. He would attend events of his extended family and could often be found cutting a rug at those events. Joe loved the Mitchell's and wanted everyone of them to know that he was in their corner.
Joe could often be found shooting the breeze with his brother Dale in one of their cars listening to "the ghetto" on repeat while they sat and talked for hours. Joe was a talker and loved sharing his insight on politics and government conspiracies. We will all miss him telling a story and ending with "understand what I'm saying?"
His legacy of generosity and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of his granddaughters Marlisia, Martavia, and Ieayna, and Martavion, his great grandson, Yas'Zir. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette, daughter Lisa, and his parents, Charles and Maxine and five siblings, Jerry, Carolyn, Joenell, Mary, & Betty.
Joe leaves to celebrate his life a loving family including his brother, Dale (Kathleen) Mitchell; two sisters, Aranda and Cheyenne Mitchell; sister-in law, Myrtle Mitchell; brother-in-law Leon McLaughlin; along with his numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Though small in stature, your presence was larger than life. We take your life's lessons and move forward knowing that we were loved. May your body and soul rest in eternal peace.
Lovingly Submitted,
The Family
