The Rev. Edward Thomas Payne, 77, passed away on January 30, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. A gifted operatic artist, devoted educator, and faithful servant of the Episcopal Church, he left behind a legacy of music and ministry that continues to resonate with all who knew him.
Born on May 16, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Betty and Brady Payne, Edward was a proud Tarblooder and graduate of Glenville High School's Class of 1966. His passion for music led him to pursue higher education at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he earned both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music in Voice. He furthered his academic journey with a Master of Music from Case Western Reserve University and later answered a spiritual calling by earning a Master of Divinity from The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church.
Edward's professional career as an operatic baritone took him across Italy and the United States. Among his many accomplishments was a two-year tenure at the prestigious Metropolitan Opera-a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication to his craft. His love for performance was matched by his commitment to teaching. He shared his knowledge and passion for voice with students at Fisk University and Wright State University and served as Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at Ohio University.
In addition to his musical achievements, Edward embraced a life of spiritual service within the Episcopal Church. Over the years, he served faithfully in numerous roles, including Deacon, Priest, Priest-in-Charge, Rector Interim, and Supply Priest.
Edward is survived by his wife, Dr. Gail Donnelly Payne; his sons Bran Payne (Melissa), COL. Kevin Payne (Irene), and Sherman Payne (Evelyn); and his six grandchildren, Garet, Dru, Kristian, Kevin, Kellen, and Emil. He is also survived by his sister Joanne Elie and brother Richard Payne. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brady and Betty Payne; his sisters Gayle Williams and Kimberly Hilton; and his brother Roger Payne.
Known affectionately as "Eddie" to close family and friends, Edward had an enduring love for opera as well as Motown music-genres that reflected both the depth and joy that music brought to his life. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all whose lives were enriched by his voice, teaching, and ministry.
