Donald Gillespie Jr. was born on July 9, 1965, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Donald Gillespie Sr. and Cheryl Gillespie. One of eight children and the second oldest, Donald was active from an early age. As a young man, he developed a love for sports, especially basketball, and spent countless hours playing on courts throughout the city. He attended Shaw High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1984.

As an adult, Donald dedicated his career to public service. He served as a Correctional Officer with Cuyahoga County for more than three decades before retiring. He also worked for over twenty years with the Shaker Heights City School District. His commitment to both professions reflected his strong work ethic and dedication to serving his community.

Outside of work, Donald enjoyed spending time with his son, family, and friends. He loved sports, traveling, and motorcycles. One of his favorite traditions was hosting house parties to cheer on the Cleveland Browns. Win or lose, the outcome of the game was never as important as having loved ones gathered together, sharing laughter and making memories.

Donald departed this life on July 13, 2026, just days after celebrating his 61st birthday.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving son, Jailen Gillespie; his sisters, Pat, Nafessah, Belama, and Donita Gillespie; his brothers, Rufus Gillespie and Mark Ivey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever remember his kindness, humor, and love for family.
